Alameda

Welcome to Alameda

Alameda is the only inhabited island in the San Francisco Bay and has a character totally unlike that of Oakland, which sits a stone’s throw across the water. For decades, the Alameda Naval Air Station (NAS) brought servicemen and women into Alameda and heavily influenced the way the community developed. The NAS closed down years ago, and that land has been repurposed to house businesses such as a vodka distiller, beer brewer, and warehouse sales for a national home furnishings brand. Lands that were previously undeveloped were converted to housing. Older housing includes some turn-of-the-century Victorians and a number of bungalow-type homes. Many of the Victorian homes on Alameda were brought over from Oakland many decades ago when Oakland city leaders and developers chose to clear large swaths of land and build newer homes. As such, Alameda has an “old town feel” and most streets feature at least a few Victorians. The newer housing stock is generally located near the Webster Tube and old NAS area, while some 1950s and 1980s construction is found on BayFarm Island, at the end of Alameda closest to the Oakland Airport. Alameda is also well-known for its long stretch of beach, most of which is fronted by condominiums. Alameda’s beach frontage remains the only stretch of accessible sandy beach in the East Bay, and it can be quite popular on hot summer weekends. Alameda’s two primary shopping streets are Webster Street (at the northerly end of the island) and Park Avenue (toward the southerly end of the island), and Alameda has every amenity most residents need without having to leave the island. Alameda’s connections to the surrounding area include a roadway tunnel (Webster Tube, which connects to Oakland’s downtown area) and several bridges (including the High Street Bridge which connects Park Avenue to Oakland’s Dogtown neighborhood). Residents can take buses and shuttles and/or a ferry that carries Alamedans directly to downtown San Francisco, and there are plans to start a “water taxi” between one part of the northern end of Alameda and the Jack London Square restaurant and entertainment area. Around 80,000 people happily call Alameda home.
