Welcome to Piedmont

Piedmont is a small city with the unique distinction of being surrounded by another, larger city (Oakland) on all sides. It sits in the lower Oakland hills, above Lake Merritt, and below Oakland’s Montclair district, yet Piedmont has been a fully independent city since January 1907, when it was incorporated. A large part of its early population included “refugees” from San Francisco after the great 1906 quake decimated the city. By the 1920s Piedmont was known as the “City of Millionaires” as it was reputed to have more millionaires per square mile than any other location in the U.S. at that time.

Piedmont is home to just over 11,000 residents over an area of 1.7 square miles. Residents often move to Piedmont to take advantage of the wonderful Piedmont public school system (at times recognized as one of the top school districts in the nation), the generous distribution of beautifully tended parks throughout the city, and public services the city offers including highly responsive emergency services (Fire and Police Departments). Piedmont has a reputation for being a more closely patrolled and generally safer community to live in than adjacent neighborhoods in Oakland. Piedmont also offers a sense of “small town” community that is hard to find in big urban cities like Oakland, Berkeley, and San Francisco, and this is put on full display at the July 4th morning pancake breakfast followed by an impressive July 4th parade.

While Piedmont residents still rely on Oakland services for most daily needs: restaurants, laundry, larger grocery shopping runs, and so on. (Piedmont’s own downtown consists of several banks, a family-owned grocery store and deli, a gas station, and a few real estate and financial services businesses.) Piedmont homes carry a premium when compared with homes in Oakland, in large part due to the services provided (schools and policing services). These homes include more modest single-family homes, quite similar to those found in adjacent Oakland neighborhoods, to substantial and grand estate properties set on spacious parcels and graced by amenities such as tennis courts, swimming pools, and additional quarters for resident support staff. Piedmont's architecture and improvements are controlled through a citywide design review process so that all its homes and neighborhoods are generally attractive and somewhat unique. Many Piedmont homes offer lovely views of the San Francisco Bay and Bay Bridge, as well.

Piedmont has been home to many notable residents. Jack London wrote “Call of the Wild” from a home in Piedmont. John F. Kennedy’s Secretary of Defense, Robert McNamara, grew up in Piedmont. Football player Bubba Paris lived there and raised his daughters in Piedmont.
