Welcome to Saratoga

Saratoga is an affluent community, with typical home prices tipping past the $3,500,000 mark. It is home to the unique Mountain Winery, an intimate concert venue nestled in the lower Santa Cruz Mountains, as well as the home of Villa Montalvo. Excellent schools make this an attractive place for families. The fine dining and unique shops within its roughly half-mile-long downtown corridor feel far removed from the traffic and other realities that are so omnipresent throughout much of the Bay Area. The City backs up to miles and miles of state and regional parklands, including Big Basin, Castle Rock, and Portola Redwoods State Park. Its population is just over 30,000 in just shy of 12.4 square miles. Saratoga was reputedly the most expensive housing market in the United States in 2016, according to one source, and among the most educated towns in the U.S. according to a Forbes article in 2009. While Saratoga has attracted a lot of attention for its wealth and exclusivity, it also boasts an impressive roster of notable residents, both past and present (including Mary Brown, widow of the abolitionist John Brown). Saratoga’s role as a host to the arts dates back at least to the west coast premiere of Puccini’s opera, Madame Butterfly, which was held in Saratoga’s Hakone Garden in 1923. This tradition continues today, on the grounds of the Mountain Winery and Villa Montalvo.

Saratoga’s nickname, “the tollgate” derives from the tolls collected by a sawmill operator, Martin McCarthy, who charged a toll to people coming to the Santa Clara Valley through what was then known as McCarthysville. That tollgate still exists at the intersection of Big Basin Way and 3rd Street/Turkey Track.
